Destin / Overview & History
Destin is world renowned for its fishing industry and its magnificient beaches. A thriving resort community, Destin still manages to maintain a certain small town atmosphere and charm.

Destin is also known as the world's luckiest fishing village and is the home to Florida's largest fishing fleet. Deep sea bottom fishing is excellent year round here, while inshore trolling runs from March through November. Charter boats are available for half-day, all day and overnight trips.
And if you have your heart set on catching the really big one, offshore trolling for billfish is also available throught charters out of Destin.
Destin has also gained a reputation for its fine restaurants, unique shops, and world class resorts. It is home to a very popular upscale outlet shopping center, a large water park, and numeous golf courses.
Area Trivia:
- The term "Emerald Coast" refers to an over 100 mile area of the Florida panhandle. This area is also called the "Miracle Strip."
- The twin cities of Niceville and Valparaiso grew from an 1800s fishing village named Boggy.
- Crestview earned its nickname, "Hub City" as an important trade center in the late 1800s.
- DeFuniak Springs, now the Walton County seat, was named after the L&N Railroad's chief engineer, Frederick deFuniak. It was originally called Open Pond after the local train station of the Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad.
- The Scotch from North Carolina were led to an area between Niceville and DeFuniak Springs during the early 1800s. They followed the Euchee Indians to their new home, which is now Walton County.
